Today, literally dozens upon dozens of angry rad-Trad types blew their gaskets at the news that our Holy Father modified the Good Friday Prayer for the Jewish conversion. Some have even threatened to leave their in-full-communion parishes due to this prayer and go join up with some SSPX mass location. That is absurd.
The prayer lasts 10 seconds and is said ONCE a year. If you are not familiar, would you like to see it?
Old Prayer: (1960)
Let us pray also for the Jews: that almighty God may remove the veil from their hearts; so that they too may acknowledge Jesus Christ our Lord. Let us pray. Let us kneel. Arise. Almighty and eternal God, who dost also not exclude from thy mercy the Jews: hear our prayers, which we offer for the blindness of that people; that acknowledging the light of thy Truth, which is Christ, they may be delivered from their darkness. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
New Prayer: (2008)
Let us pray for the Jews. That our God and Lord enlighten their hearts, so that they may recognize Jesus Christ, the Savior of all men. Let us pray. Let us bend our knees. Rise. Almighty and eternal God, who wants all of mankind to be saved and gain knowledge of the truth, grant that when the fullness of peoples enters your Church all of Israel will be saved. Through Christ, our Lord.
Newsflash to those offended: The Pope is in charge. He has ever right to do this if he feels it is necessary and correct to do so. Being angry and threatening to separate yourself is a Protestant mentality. Do you not see this?
I suspect he did this not to placate the ADL or some other Jewish lobbying group, but to put fears of Bishops and Priests aside who would like to celebrate the older Mass. He wants more people to orient themselves properly in worship. Now they will be able to do so without fear of backlash in this area. If you remember, the supposed Anti-Jewish sentiment (which you can see was not there to begin with) has now been smoothed over even more. By the way, anti-semitism is much more a problem in Europe as I understand it. That has also been a greater place of resistance to the traditional Mass.
I am currently reading his "Spirit of the Liturgy" which is fascinating. I see this move as a way to make provide even more freedom this venerable liturgy. Remember that as has been said on other much more famous and illustrious blogs, Pope Benedict is enacting his Marshall Plan for the Church.
