Happy Feast of St. Jerome!
To all my fellow scripture lovers I want to wish a Happy Feast of St. Jerome. This Great Doctor did the world an amazing service which to this day I believe is under appreciated. We should thank God for his work in St. Jerome.
We've all heard this quote, which was also in the Office of Readings this morning:
"Ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Christ."
It is used over and over and over by Catholic apologists. For good measure: Its true. Not only Catholics but Protestants should take some time to learn about Jerome and his work. Jerome after all, is the greatest scripture scholar of all the ancient Christians. Much of his work is still influential today. Take a look in almost any Bible with footnotes in it and you'll see notes saying something like "Jerome says..." or "The Vulgate uses..."
Traditional Collect for today:
O God, who for the expounding of the Holy Scriptures didst raise up in Thy Church the great and holy Doctor Jerome; we beseech Thee, grant that by his intercession and merits we may, by Thy help, be enabled to practice what he taught us both by word and by work.
